I only wanted to say that I liked the book just because of the strong emontions between the characters. It´s some kind of pure, innocent love -
I can´t really describe it... But some parts of the book where really overwhelming because of these feelings.

I find it so thrilling that you would feel that way about something I wrote. Writing is such a subjective thing and people’s reactions to stories are also so subjective – it feels like such a random stroke of luck when a reader feels for my characters the same way I do! Thank you for letting me know!

By the way, I don´t think that any of the opinions people are writing about the book are influenced just because you popped in here!

That’s good to know – but I would be afraid that politeness would maybe stifle people’s honesty so I will stay out from the discussions :0)

There are lots of other writers who can cope well with positive and negatie opinions about their books. It depends in which way they are written, I think. It's not what you say, but how you say it. And honestly, I do not think that any of the people who publish their thoughts about books here mean to upset or delight the autors.

I agree! In the end it’s up to the readers to decide what they think. But sometimes I think it does a writer no good to read too many reviews. Particularly when they range (as mine do) from ‘moved as slow as frozen treacle’ to ‘a real page turner. I couldn’t put it down!’ :grin: As a writer you have to learn to understand that your stories can’t please everyone, and that your work is what it is – as long as it’s the best you can possibly make it, and as long as you’ve written from the heart; then the most you can hope for is that someone somewhere will find resonance in it.

Because it´s no use to do so. There´s nothing to win or to lose.
We´re juts nuts about books and love to talk about them, aren´t we?

Hello guys, apologies again for my complete lack of German!

I wonder if you would do me a favour? One of my readers has asked me to draw and sign a book plate for a friend living in Germany. She asked me to draw Rory’s ghost – based on how she imagines him to look. I’ve done it for her, of course. But I would like to put a relevant quote on the finished piece, and I haven't yet received my copies of Schattenpfade, and don’t know the German for the line I’d like to use.

Normally I’d e-mail Astrid, but she’s on holiday. Then I thought of you guys! Can you look up the translation for me? Don’t worry if you can’t – just if you were free at any stage maybe you could look it up?

The line I need is from the chapter 'Shearings Ghost' and reads

Then he turned to her, his fine face a picture of regret, and held his finger to his lips.

Of course I hope that you will enjoy the book, but no matter what you think of it I'd love to hear your recension (review?) So do be honest with me. (if you are more comfortable writing a review in German, do so! I'll start a 'Schattenpfade readers letters' page and post the reviews in German if folks prefer :0) )

Many apologies for my lack of German! I can't read the German section of your post :0(

It always worried me with the 'Cat' cover and tag that folks might think the cats had more to do with the narrative then they do. But saying that, I do adore that cover, and was very pleased when the Irish publishers chose it for their reprint. It's such a visual treat and very evocative.

You have to wait until book three for more cats I'm afraid, and there is only the smallest hint of ghosts in the next books, as ghosts tend to haunt places where people live permanently and the next books are almost exclusively set in mobile camps or the wild forest.

I took a chance on making each book in this trilogy different to the one that came before. I know it is a risk, as once people read a book they like they tend to want more of the same again for the next one. Though each book follows the same plot arc and main characters, they each have thier own different setting, feel and atmosphere. The thing that really carries through ( aside from Wyn, Christopher and Razi's determined mission to uncover the truth about Alberon) is the main character’s love of each other and how that is very often an obstacle to the completion of the missions they have set them selves :0)

Thank you so much for choosing to read Schattenpfade! It's such thrill to me that the book has been released in Germany. My German publishers have been incredible to work with, and I loved working with my German translator. I found her to be a very funny, intelligent and professional person to deal with, and have no doubt that her translation is lovely. I'm certain that any yucky bits you find in the text are because I wrote them that way and not the other way about!
I'm afraid I don't speak German. I've had to ask a kind friend translate this post for me! (thank you so much Kerri!) Vielen herzlichen Dank, daß Ihr Euch entschlossen habt "Schattenpfade" zu lesen. Es ist wirklich ein überwältigendes Gefühl für mich, daß das Buch in Deutschland veröffentlicht worden ist. Die Zusammenarbeit mit meinem deutschen Verleger war einfach fantastisch, und ich habe die Arbeit mit meiner deutschen Übersetzerin richtig genossen. Sie ist eine humorvolle, intelligente und professionelle Person und ich habe keine Zweifel, dass ihre Übersetzung gelungen ist. Falls einige Passagen trotzdem etwas holperig erscheinen sollten, so bin ich mir sicher, dass dies nicht der Übersetzung, sondern meinen Schreibstil zuzuschreiben ist.
Da ich selbst kein Deutsch spreche, habe ich eine Freundin gebeten diesen Beitrag für mich zu übersetzen (vielen Dank dafür, Kerri). Aber Eure Meinung ist mir sehr wichtig. Deshalb besucht bitte mein Blog oder meine Webseite und lasst mich Eure Meinung über das Buch wissen. Vielleicht könnt Ihr mir auch eine Rezension schicken, welche ich dann auf der Seite mit den Leserzuschriften ins Internet stelle werde :o)
