The impassioned but doomed romance seems to owe much to Robert James Waller's The Bridges of Madison County. Once again, a housewife who has focused on everyone but herself indulges in a brief, intense, secret affair with a stranger who changes her life forever. As the story begins, Adrienne Willis is 60, the divorced mother of three grown children. To help her troubled daughter cope with the untimely recent death of her husband, Adrienne tells her the tale of her love affair, which took place 15 years before. At the time, Adrienne was an uptight matron whose ex-husband had just left her for a younger woman. This rejection colors her entire life, and Sparks realistically portrays a vulnerable and isolated woman who throws herself into raising her children to escape her despair. Paul Flanner, her paramour, is a surgeon and an obsessive workaholic with no genuine connection to his wife or son, whose world completely falls apart when one of his patients inexplicably dies. Sparks builds a taut, plausible relationship between his protagonists, but even fans may be irked by the obviousness of their story and the inevitability of their fate.

Doch obwohl dieser Rahmen viel versprechend ist und die Grundvoraussetzungen für eine bezwingende Lektüre alle vorhanden sind, werden nur die Leser, die ohnehin schon Higgins-Fans sind, von diesem Roman völlig gefesselt sein.

The author, who has taken on such controversial subjects as euthanasia (Mercy), teen suicide (The Pact) and sterilization laws (Second Glance), turns her gaze on genetic planning, the prospect of creating babies for health purposes and the ethical and moral fallout that results. Kate Fitzgerald has a rare form of leukemia. Her sister, Anna, was conceived to provide a donor match for procedures that become increasingly invasive. At 13, Anna hires a lawyer so that she can sue her parents for the right to make her own decisions about how her body is used when a kidney transplant is planned. Meanwhile, Jesse, the neglected oldest child of the family, is out setting fires, which his firefighter father, Brian, inevitably puts out. Picoult uses multiple viewpoints to reveal each character's intentions and observations, but she doesn't manage her transitions as gracefully as usual; a series of flashbacks are abrupt. Nor is Sara, the children's mother, as well developed and three-dimensional as previous Picoult protagonists. Her devotion to Kate is understandable, but her complete lack of sympathy for Anna's predicament until the trial does not ring true, nor can we buy that Sara would dust off her law degree and represent herself in such a complicated case. Nevertheless, Picoult ably explores a complex subject with bravado and clarity, and comes up with a heart-wrenching, unexpected plot twist at the book's conclusion.

In Martina Devlin's "At Least There'll Be Diamonds," the superficial protagonist is so desperate to marry for money that she weds another woman—even though she's straight. Kathy Reynolds, the financially strapped heroine of Patricia Scanlan's "Facades," learns to value the other riches in her happily married life when she sees the pain of her wealthy but lonely friend, Mari. Morag Prunty's "Spinning Sugar" depicts the relationship between a curmudgeonly male pastry chef and his gluttonous, overweight best customer. He teaches her to savor her food, and she learns to eat for quality as opposed to quantity. These stories turn on trick endings and always impart a lesson, but too often the moral leaves the heroine put meekly in her place. A notable exception to the chastened-heroine formula is Clare Dowling's "Deep Throat," which centers on housewives empowered by pornography. Though these light stories often entertain, readers looking for complex portraits of strong, independent women may be disappointed by this collection. (Mar.)
