Stuart Hadley is a young radio electronics salesman in early 1950s Oakland, California. He has what many would consider the ideal life; a nice house, a pretty wife, a decent job with prospects for advancement, but he still feels unfulfilled; something is missing from his life. He tries to fill his void first with drinking, and sex, and then with religious fanaticism, but nothing seems to be working, and it is driving him crazy. He reacts to the love of his wife and the kindness of his employer with anxiety and fear.
This is the story of Hadley´s descent into depression and madness, and the story of his redemption.
Voisces from the street is one of the earliest books that Dick ever wrote, and his only novel that has never been published, not even in a small-press edition.
Philip K. Dick has developed a reputation as an American writer whose powerful vision became an ironic reflection of the present. This novel completes the publication of his canon.

Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was born in Chicago and lifed most of his life in California.
He was the author of forty-four published novels and more than 120 short stories. His wirk the man in the high castle was awarded the Hugo award for science fiction in 1963. Flow my tears, the policeman said received the John W. Campbell Memorial award in 1974.
Dick´s work have been honored with numerous other awards in the united states and abroad. His work is published in 25 countries. Nine of Dicks works have been adapted for film, including his book Do android dream of electric sheep? (Blade Runner) and his short stories “We can remember it for wholesale” (Total Recall) and “The minority report”. Most recently, his novel A scanner darkly has been adapted for the screen. In 2007 the tenth film will be released, based on Dick´s short story The Golden Man. More are in works.

Meine Meinung:
Es handelt sich um ein extrem frühes, vorher noch nie veröffentliches Mainstream-Werk des Autors, der die Science Fiction so maßgeblich prägte.
Manche halten dieses Werk für Dicks ersten, abgeschlossenen Romantext, andere denken Gather yourself together ist der erste.
Dick ist mit seinen Mainstream-Romanen zu einem Chronisten der Beziehungen der unteren Mittelschicht im Kalifornien der 50ziger Jahre geworden
Dieses Zeitgefühl wird auch in diesem Roman spürbar.
Das Voices from the street mehr als 50 Jahre brauchte, um veröffentlicht zu werden, wundert mich nicht. Erst einmal ist es literarisch noch nicht so ausgereift wie Dicks anerkannte Meisterwerke. Zweitens ist der Protagonist Stuart Hadley ein echter Antiheld, mit nicht immer politisch einwandfreien Ansichten. Das war man in den USA in den frühen 50ziger Jahren vermutlich noch nicht so gewohnt.
Stuart Hadley äußerst sich schon am Anfang negativ über McCarthys Kommunistenjagd, kritisch zu dem Atombombenabwurf und interessiert sich für religiöse Veranstaltungen einer Sekte. Zudem befindet er sich in einer existenziellen Sinnkrise.
Alles riskante Themen in der damaligen Zeit, teilweise sogar heute noch.
Die große Stärke Dicks ist, wie tief er in seine Charaktere eintaucht und ihr innerstes zeigt.
z.B. Stuarts Aggressivität, auch wenn er sie nicht immer auslebt, selbst gegenüber seiner Frau Ellen ist sie vorhanden.
Mit Jim Fergesson gibt es einen zweiten, gefestigteren Charakter, der als Gegenpol zu Hadley dessen innere Zerrissenheit verstärkt.
Zum Stil: Der Roman ist wortlastig und dialogreich. Einiges wird zerredet.
Das es keine Kapiteleinteilung gibt, erschwert die Lesbarkeit.
Mir gefallen aber die Beschreibungen der Innenansichten der Protagonisten und die Ortsbeschreibungen, neben Oakland z.B. San Francisco, in der Dick genau beobachtet:
Zitat: In summer the great city was beautiful. Hot sunlight had burned away the fog; buildings rose clear and sharp, seperated by narrow streets no wider than footpaths. Cars crept up sides of hills, wavered, shifted to low, barely managed to reach the ledge that was the next intersection. All hills sloped down and down to the vast blue through of the bay. Before the streets and buildings disappeared into the frigif surface of water there was a narrow band of warehouse, piers, docks, a ribbon of commerce soilidly ringing in the city.

Für Dick-Fans hat der Roman als Rarität Sammlerwert.
Wer über die Schwächen eines Erstlingswerks, das zudem nicht überarbeitet wurde, hinweg sieht, könnte den Roman mögen, so wie ich und Philip K. Dick als einen der wichtigsten amerikanischen Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts erkennen.
