'Septimus Heap - Magyk' - chapter 01 - 12

Although I haven't finished this section yet, I'll start with my first impressions. I like the fact that being a wizard seems to be just another occupation and craft to learn and nothing special and extraordinary. It simply belongs to the world of the Heaps. That's at least the impression I got reading the first pages. I have however to admit that up to now Harry Potter and its wizarding world is still my favourite

No one here?
I started reading and i'm ravished, such a nice diction.
But i must admit, that i didn't understand anything. Espacially the magic words are hard to read and to understand. But till now there was no need to take a look at the dictionary, and the context helped me to understand the unknown words.... i'm so proud.Oh....and i was surprised by the implicitness with which the author speaks about wolverines and witches and warlocks. On the first pages, there are none of these things and i thought, thats a total normal city and then in a very little sub-clause the author said that in the Forest there was a Wolverine problem... i was really frightened.
P.S.: Oh my godness, it takes much more time to write in english.... *wipe the sweat from the face*
P.P.S.: Hope anyone understand...what i've written.
P.P.P.S.: hating english comas...I would never type a coma anymore...

The rubbish chute ride is really great, especially Maxie's view of it
I really hope there will be more scences envolving this lovely wolfshound. -
I just started reading and I´m a bit disappointed but I can´t really describe why...It´s not very difficult to read and I just had to look up one word in the dictionary, the writing is very imaginative but something is missing to my opinion. Perhaps I´ve just got to read a bit more pages...

Hello, Bibi,
( Attention: My english is extremely bad )
I felt it, too, while I read it. ( some time ago... ) I think, it is a matter of excitement: The text is like a slow brook, not like a fast river... It is nice to read, it is entertaining ... but it is not exciting.

I'm still pondering about the style of this book, whether it the funny remarks are meant to make it easier for children to read this book or they are meant in a sarcastic way. E.g. p.93
ZitatMarcia had actually agreed with him without an argument. but then, he smiled to himself, they were all in the same boat now.
Or the desciption of the hunter, the way he observes the surroundings. Is it meant to descipe him as a scary hunter or is it some funny imitaion of Aragorn? -
Yesterday I`ve started to read the book late in the evening and I haven`t come very far because of a few phone calls that have been a great deal more important for me.
But I must say that I like it very much and find it easy to read. Perhaps it is why I simply love fantasy novels anyway?
But to judge about the book is far to early for me.
See you later

Yesterday i had enogh time and patience to read the book a little bit more.
I ignored the laughing man at the other bedside and read the book loud to him. I wanted to do something for my pronunciation. At the time he felt out of bed because of a very hard laughattack, i stopped this and was a little bit offended.
My spoken english must be very worse. The book is very easy to read, for my taste it is a little bit too easy. So short sentences, so easy words. I think it is a childs book and not really written for grown-up-reading-owls. But this doesn't decrease the fun, i have by reading this book.
The spirit that this book bears is so nice....But i started to think about the fact, if english isn't the best language to read a fantasybook. English is so a modern language, i think in german, there are the better words to describe a magic land an magic inhabitants... and so on. Englisch doesn't sound so..... old an mystic.

I think english is a very multifaceted language: you can use it in a modern way and you can use a more ancient style (like in Lord of the Rings) I considered it always as the language which suits every kind of literature. Funny how opinions can differ

I´ve just finished this part and I agree with you, it´s very easy to read, but I´m not really thrilled. I think it´s because the persons are all a bit dull, not very good personated. I´ve got difficulties to imagine them.Marcia Overstrand is the only person I can see before me with her liking of suede, fur and leather in purple.
Reading on, I hope I´ll get a better feeling for the characters, because it´s not as I wouldn´t like the book at all. -

I´ve made up my mind to read literature that`s originally written in english language in exactly that language. Why shouldn`t I if I can?!

Ikarus you can do what you want, no one wants to hinder you.
But for my taste, german is the "better" language for fantasy and mystic or magic books. -

I didn`t even mean to persuade you to read fantasy in english, but I haven`t understand your explanation quite right, I think:
Do you think of the german language as an ancient language and the english language as modern, or do you think of fantasy literature as being ancient?
-
Hm... With the english language i associate the latest english chart songs, many words in softwareprograms or other technical things.....but no magic hats, spells or tiny little fairyfigures. Its not the language that isn't ancient for me but the feeling i have by reading it.
Not easy to discribe, perhaps i made many mistakes... so i try it in german, for the better comprehension :Also mir ist nicht die Sprache zu modern, sondern einfach mein Gefühl dabei. Englisch benutze ich meist in Verbindung mit modernen Dingen, Charts, PC-Spiele, Programme, etc. Daher ist es ungewohnt für mich und das heimelige Gefüjl, daß dieses Buch vermitteln will, kommt bei mir nicht wirklich an.... ich weiß nicht ob, das jetzt verständlicher war, aber besser kann ich es nicht beschreiben. -
Ah, now I`ve got the point, BJ
Yes, then it`s different for me. We read different literature in English in my course, all kinds of texts and for me the language bears only a great deal more ways for any kind of expressions. Perhaps that has it`s reason only in the number of vocabulary. English vocabulary to German vocabulary = 3:1, I suppose.

Aaaah, finally: just got the call from the library that the book is in hold for me to pick up. So maybe I contribute something tomorrow or so. If there's still anybody left in this part of the discussion by then ...

Maybe me... I've no time to read... *cry*

I just have finished the chapter 9 and I am simply enjoying the book, its gentle and soft humour and solid writing.
In fact I`ve just decided to recommend it to my pupils and will go slowly through the pages once more to write down not perfectly known vocabulary.I must admit the story makes me smile very often. For example the part when princess Jenna gets the little pebble as a pet to care for or think of the behaviour of Marcia. It amuses me.
I`m glad that I bought it.
